If you’ve never returned home from work or from running errands and found that your keys aren’t where they should be, then you’re in the minority. That sinking stomach feeling will be familiar to many of us – and can leave you feeling worried about where your keys could be and who might find them.

To help you out, we’re going to uncover 5 clever ways to make sure you never lose your keys, and when it’s time to call a locksmith!

Lost Your Keys?

Most of the time, losing your keys is a momentary lapse in memory – something that happens now and again and provides a good wake up call to remind you to get a new keyring or download one of the new smartphone apps which can link your phone to your keys for such situations.

Here at Rutherford’s, we’re here to help on those occasions where your keys cannot be found. We can send one of our professional and friendly emergency locksmiths out to replace your locks and present you with a whole new set of keys. However, before you plan for this scenario, here are a few tips to make sure you’re much less likely to forget or lose your keys again!

Try These Ideas to Never Misplace Your Keys Again

  1.     Decorate your keys.

If your keys catch your eye, the chances of you forgetting to pick them up before you go out are slim. Some of the best and easiest ways to do this include painting the top of your key with nail varnish, investing in a bright keyring, and getting a new key cut from a patterned metal.

  1.     Link your keys to your smartphone.

If losing your keys and calling an emergency locksmith is a regular occurrence for you, then you may want to invest in a solution that is attached to your keys and links to your smartphone via Bluetooth. When you activate the app from your phone, your key will emit a noise that helps you to pinpoint the location of your keys quickly.

  1.     Wearable solutions.

This is a particularly good idea if you’re going out with minimal baggage, whether for a meal, drinks with friends, or out for a run or to exercise. Wearing your house key around your neck is a great way of keeping it safe, so you know exactly where it is. This will only work with one or two keys rather than a whole chain of them though.

  1.     Try rhyming or chanting.

Believe it or not, if you repeat what you’re looking for while you’re looking for it, you may find that you can pinpoint its location more quickly and easily. Similarly, making up a little rhyme to repeat to yourself before you go out, including the words of everything you need to remember, can be an easy way of remembering your keys before you walk out the door.

  1.     Leave a set with a friend.

Having tried and tested most of these ideas and tips ourselves, we can 100% vouch for the simplicity of leaving a spare set of keys with a friend. Not only will this avoid waiting for an emergency locksmith callout, but it will also give you peace of mind knowing that if something happens to your property when you are away or out, your friends have a set of keys to keep an eye on your place.
